General Information:

PLANNING, DRAWINGS and ENGINEERING

  • Certain projects may or may not require submittal to an engineering firm before construction starts. The Alberta Building Code does not always give us all the information required to build for sufficient and optimal structural integrity.

    • DECKS

      • Generally, permit(s) are NOT required when the scope of work is defined below:

        • Height ≤ 0.6 m (≈ 24 in) above grade

        • Not attached to the house (freestanding)

        • No roof, pergola, or privacy walls

        • No guards or stairs required

        • Not supporting a hot tub

        • Not over a utility easement

        • Single-family residential property

        • Permits required where

      • Permit(s) ARE required where:

        • Deck surface > 0.6 m (24 in) above grade

        • Attached to the house (ledger board)

        • Guards or stairs required

        • Roof, pergola, or privacy screen attached

        • Hot tub on or planned for the deck

        • Beam spans exceed code tables

        • Point loads (posts not stacked to footings below)

        • Deck over 1.8–2.4 m (6–8 ft) high (varies by city)

        • Roof loads supported by deck

        • Unusual framing (steel, flitch beams, LVLs not prescriptive)

        • Poor soil conditions or non-standard footings

        • Deck supports another major structure (stairs, landing, second deck)

    • RESIDENTIAL FENCING

      • Permit(s) are NOT required where:

        • Height ≤ 1.8 m (6 ft) in rear and side yards

        • Height ≤ 1.2 m (4 ft) in front yards

        • Located entirely on private property

        • Not on a corner lot sightline

        • Not retaining soil (not a retaining wall)

        • Not electrified

        • Not part of a pool enclosure

        • Single-family residential property

      • Permit(s) ARE required where:

        • Fence exceeds height limits

          • Over 6 ft (1.8 m) in rear or side yard

          • Over 4 ft (1.2 m) in front yard

        • Fence is on a corner lot and affects visibility triangles

        • Fence is on or near a property line dispute

        • Fence is part of a pool enclosure

        • Fence is electrified
